2024 Boys Varsity Volleyball
The Caxys concluded the 2024 season against visiting Cristo Rey St. Martin and dropped a 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) match. After closing the deficit to 18-17 in the first set, LFA allowed Cristo Rey to pull away for the 25-18 final. The second frame played similar to the first as LFA pulled to within a point at 17-16 before the visitors scored eight of the final 13 points of the match to clinch the win. Nolan Greenwell ’25 totaled seven kills while Joey Chen ’25 added five kills. Joon Lee ’25 and Jaden Kim ’25 split setter duties with each tallying six assists while Lee added four digs. Noah Cedergren ’24 led the Caxys with six digs followed by Shunta Nambara ’24 with five and Carlos Brito ’26 had three digs.

LFA faced Latin for the second time in a week and dropped another close contest in two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23. Both sets went back-and-forth with Latin pulling ahead late to secure the win each time. The first set saw the Caxys leading, 16-14, before allowing five straight points by the visitors. After LFA tied the score at 21-21 in the second set, Latin answered with two points only to see the Caxys come back and trail by one before allowing the final point of the match. Joey Chen ’25 finished the match with four kills, three digs and a service ace. Noah Cedergren ’24 totaled seven digs while Sy Rosenblatt ’25 had a pair of kills along with a block and an ace. Joon Lee ’25 totaled six assists and a kill and Vojtech Nesrsta ’25 added two blocks and two digs.
The Caxys opened a three-match evening at the Evanston Township Quad against the hosts and fell in two sets (25-21, 25-10). LFA held an 18-14 lead in the first set before Evanston reeled off seven straight points to take a three-point advantage. The Caxys ended the run, but the Wildkits held off LFA by scoring four of the final six points to take the first set. The second set saw a red hot jump serve for Evanston that quickly opened up a 9-3 lead that the Caxys would never threaten through the remainder of the match. Joon Lee ’25 totaled four assists and four digs and Noah Cedergren ’24 added four digs. Sy Rosenblatt ’25 finished with three kills and a block and Jonathan Xiao ’24 recorded two blocks.
The Caxys ran into another tough opponent from the strong Central Suburban League volleyball conference and dropped a 2-0 (25-10, 25-10) match against Maine East. Both sets saw the Blue Demons take early leads that the Caxys were unable to overcome. Joon Lee ’25 had four assists and Jaden Kim ’25 finished with three assists. Nolan Greenwell ’25, Yusef Primus ’25, Vojtech Nesrsta ’25, and Caden Ye ’26 each tallied two kills while Noah Cedergren ’24 added four digs, Sy Rosenblatt ’25 had three digs, and Matthew Jun ’26 and Kim had two digs apiece.
The Caxys finished the Evanston Township Quad with a 2-0 win (25-15, 25-20) over Noble Street College Prep. With the score tied at 12-12, LFA went on a 9-1 run to open up a 21-13 lead to take the first set. The Caxys couldn’t shake off Noble Street as easily in the second frame while leading by as many as eight points before a late charge by the opponent cut the deficit to 22-20. LFA secured the win with three straight points to close the match. Nolan Greenwell ’25 led the offense with seven kills while Sy Roseblatt ’25 capped a productive evening with six kills. Joon Lee ’25 totaled 11 assists and a pair of digs. Shunta Nambara ’24 played his first game of the season as libero and registered seven digs and three service aces.
In an epic match that featured 112 combined points between LFA and Latin the final tally came down to just four points with the Caxys on the short side of a 2-0 (26-24, 32-30) decision. After dropping a back-and-forth first set, the Caxys found themselves in a 19-11 hole in the second frame. A furious rally closed the deficit, but still facing match point down 24-20, LFA reeled off four straight points to knot the score and send the match into a frantic bid to win by two for each team. When the dust settled, the scoreboard was in Latin’s favor with a final of 32-30. Noah Cedergren ’24 finished with seven digs and a service ace while Joey Chen ’25 added four digs and two kills. Nolan Greenwell ’25 had five kills, a dig, a block, and an ace, and Joon Lee ’25 totaled five assists, two blocks, two aces and a dig.
The Caxys faced St. Viator at Glore Gymnasium and came up on the short side of a 2-0 (26-24, 25-12) score. LFA held serve and a 24-23 lead late in the first set before allowing the Lions to score the final three points of the frame. St. Viator used the momentum from the end of the first set into the start of the second as the visitors took a 9-4 advantage. The Caxys responded with two straight points to cut the deficit to three, but St. Viator answered with five consecutive points to take command and eventually close out the match. Joon Lee ’25 was all over the court with eight assists, four digs and three kills. Noah Cedergren ’24 finished with six digs while Nolan Greenwell ’25 had four kills, a dig and a block and Joey Chen ’25 tallied three kills. Jonathan Xiao ’24 and Vojtech Nesrsta ’25 each registered two blocks.
The Caxys traveled to Waukegan and fell in a 2-0 (25-15, 25-11) match on Tuesday. LFA started strong going back-and-forth with Waukegan and held a 9-6 lead. The home team answered and tied the first set before the Caxys reclaimed the advantage. A second run by the Bulldogs opened up the set as they took the first frame. The Caxys fell behind quickly in the second set and the deficit was too great to recover as Waukegan claimed the two-set decision. Joon Lee ’25 totaled eight assists and Noah Cedergren ’24 finished with five digs. Joey Chen ’25 and Nolan Greenwell ’25 had three kills apiece and Sy Rosenblatt ’25 added two kills and a block.
The Caxys dropped a 2-0 (25-14, 25-14) match against visiting Lake Forest on Thursday evening at Glore Gymnasium. LFA struggled at the service line with multiple errors throughout the match and were unable to string together a scoring run as Lake Forest took advantage of the miscues to build an early lead in each set. Joey Chen ’25 led the Caxys with six kills while Joon Lee ’25 made his season debut as the setter with eight assists. Noah Cedergren ’24 held down the back line with a team-high seven digs.
Despite totaling 30 kills and a dozen service aces, LFA dropped a three-set match (26-24, 22-25, 24-26) at Rochelle Zell on Monday. All three sets came down to the final few serves as the Caxys couldn’t take advantage of opportunities to close the match. LFA utilized seven aces in the first set and held off Rochelle Zell in a 26-24 decision. The second set saw LFA trailing, 22-16, before a five-point run pulled the Caxys to within a point before the Tigers closed the set at 25-22 to force a deciding third frame. LFA looked to close the match with a 23-20 lead in the third set before Rochelle Zell took a 24-23 advantage. The Caxys answered to tie the score, but was unable to secure the win in the 26-24 third set defeat. Joey Chen ’25 finished with 10 kills, three digs and three aces while Nolan Greenwell ’25 added eight kills and three aces. Jaden Kim ’25 totaled 24 assists and three aces and Noah Cedergren ’24 finished with 16 digs. Yusef Primus ’25 had five kills and Sy Rosenblatt ’25 added three blocks and an ace.
The Caxys opened the first of two tough matches at the West Chicago Tri with a 2-0 (25-18, 25-10) loss against Bartlett. LFA opened the first set with an early 6-4 lead before Bartlett answered to take an 18-10 advantage. The Caxys made a late run, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. The second set started with a 10-point run for Bartlett that LFA couldn’t erase in the two-set defeat. Nolan Greenwell ’25 totaled three kills and a service ace while Jaden Kim ’25 finished with five assists and a dig. Noah Cedergren ’24 and Shunta Nambara ’24 each had three digs.
The Caxys fell in two sets (25-14, 25-21) to host West Chicago to wrap up the West Chicago Tri on Saturday. A 10-2 run for West Chicago midway through the first set led the hosts to a first-set win. The second frame was the best set of the afternoon for the Caxys as the lead changed seven times between the two sides. However with LFA holding a 20-19 lead, West Chicago scored five straight points to hold off the Caxys. Yusef Primus ’25 and Joey Chen ’25 each tallied four kills while Nolan Greenwell ’25 added three kills, a block, and a service ace. Jaden Kim ’25 recorded 12 assists and Noah Cedergren ’24 finished with eight digs and an ace.
LFA recorded its first win of the season with a two-set sweep (25-15, 25-19) of visiting Beacon Academy. The Caxys started slow in the first set and found themselves tied at 13-13. The remainder of the opening frame was all LFA as the Caxys outscored the opponents by a 12-2 margin. The second set saw short runs by each side until LFA sealed the win by scoring the final five points of the match. Jaden Kim ’25 posted his first match in double figures with 16 assists along with two digs while Joey Chen ’25 led the offense with nine kills. Nolan Greenwell ’25 added seven kills and a pair of aces and the defense was anchored by Noah Cedergren ’24 (seven digs) and Carlos Brito ’26 (five digs).
LFA traveled to Wheaton Academy on Monday evening and dropped a 2-0 (25-12, 25-16) match. The Warriors jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first set. While the Caxys played even over the second half of the first set, the opening deficit was too much to overcome. The second set saw a better effort from the Caxys as LFA trailed by just four at 19-15. However, Wheaton Academy tallied six of the match’s final seven points to clinch the two-set sweep. Jaden Kim ’25 finished with eight assists and a dig while Noah Cedergren ’24 had seven digs. Nolan Greenwell ’25 recorded four kills and a service ace and Jonathan Xiao ’24 totaled three kills and a block.
The Caxys opened the season on the first day back from spring break and the layoff showed in a 2-0 (25-17, 25-12) loss against visiting Ridgewood. Both sets saw LFA and Ridgewood go back-and-forth with scores into the teens before the visitors put together a run late in each set. The first set saw the Caxys move to within a point at 14-13 before Ridgewood tallied 11 of the final 15 points in the opening frame. LFA trailed 10-9 and then 13-11 midway through the second set before the Rebels pulled away and concluded the evening by scoring the final seven points. Noah Cedergren ’24 totaled seven digs and a service ace while Jaden Kim ’25 tallied six assists and three digs. Nolan Greenwell ’25 added three kills and a block and Yusef Primus ’25 had two aces, a kill, and a dig.
